Virtualized RAN (vRAN) and Open RAN are promising technologies for the 5G and beyond 5G systems, where vRAN is composed of general-purpose hardware and Open RAN is built on open and industry-standard interfaces. Optimizing the baseband signal processing on the general-purpose hardware is one of the essential challenges to achieve the vRAN system since the baseband signal processing in 5G is known as very compute-intensive and strictly latency sensitive.
NVIDIA provides Aerial SDK as a reference implementation of High-PHY-layer functional block within baseband signal processing for NVIDIA GPU and NVIDIA Mellanox Smart NIC. Aerial SDK realizes vRAN with the GPU and Smart NIC by conforming to O-RAN Fronthaul Control/User/Synchronization-Plane interface for the Radio Unit (RU) connectivity and Small Cell Forum (SCF) 5G Femto Application Platform Interface (FAPI) for the MAC layer connectivity.
This presentation introduces that the NVIDIA platform with the GPU and Smart NIC enables high performance and full software-defined implementation of 5G vRAN systems. We also introduce some open-sourced reference implementations of the core technologies for packet processing of NVIDIA Mellanox Smart NIC in the SDK. |
