Topology Optimal Design of Optical Device Using Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy and Function Expansion Method

(in English) In order to develop high performance photonic devices, topology optimization method has been attracted a lot of attention because of its possibility to find out novel device structures. Although topology optimization is a powerful design tool, it is not necessarily easy to find global optimal solution when an objective function is multimodal. Furthermore when designing plasmonic devices, sensitivity analysis which is required in the gradient-based optimization is sometimes difficult. In this study, we employ covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) to optimize design variables in the function expansion based topology optimization framework we proposed. In addition, we propose new structure expressing function based on metaball used in computer graphics to avoid impractical complicated fine structures which are sometimes appeared in the conventional function expansion method.
