N-white balancing: white balance adjustment for adjusting multi-illuminant scenes

(in English) This paper presents a novel white balance adjustment for multi-illuminant scenes, called ``N-white balancing.'' N is the number of white points (i.e., the colors of white regions with remaining lighting effects) in an image. Most white balance adjustments focus on correcting single-illuminant scenes, so they cannot adjust multiple white points under multi-illuminant scenes. There are several state-of-the-art methods for adjusting multi-illuminant scenes, but they need to know the number of light sources or the number of divisions of an image (i.e., the number of segments) in advance. In comparison, N-white balancing can adjust multi-illuminant scenes even when we do not know the exact number of light sources or segments in a scene. In an experiment, we evaluated the color correction performance of the proposed method under various N. In addition, we confirmed that the proposed method was effective in improving the accuracy of object detection using template matching.
