Inter-HAPS Interference Reduction Technique Using Subarrayed Cylindrical Antenna with Nullforming

(in English) High-altitude platform stations (HAPS) have attracted much attention as a leading technology for coverage extension in the sixth generation (6G) mobile communications. In the case where multiple neighboring HAPSs share a common frequency band, signals from one HAPS could interfere with users connected to another HAPS or a terrestrial base station (BS). This paper proposes a novel precoding scheme for simultaneously suppressing inter-HAPS interference and interference from HAPS to terrestrial BSs, targeting a cylindrical array antenna that realizes a wide coverage such as a radius of 100 km. The proposed scheme first creates multiple virtual linear subarrays with vertical elements of a cylindrical array antenna to mitigate the interference toward other service areas by forming elevation nulls with the subarrays. Multiple null points are then created toward terrestrial BSs, and user-specific beams are finally formed. Results show that the proposed scheme improves signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of HAPS systems by at most 7.5 dB and that of terrestrial cells by at most 10 dB, compared with conventional precoding schemes without nullforming using subarrays.
