Digital filtering is one of the most fundamental signal processing techniques, and it plays a crucial role in a broad range of signal-processing-related applications, including digital communications. Since some applications require a digital filter to change its frequency response in a real-time manner during filtering operations, a digital filter must have variable frequency response. Such digital filters are well known as variable digital filters, which have variable coefficients. To get a new frequency response, one simply needs to change the coefficients of the variable digital filter being used. However, changing the coefficients is most likely to make the filter become unstable. To tackle this stability problem, the author has proposed an effective way that is based on coefficient transformations. Through performing coefficient transformations on the denominator coefficients of the transfer function of a recursive-type variable digital filter, this method can guarantee that the stability condition is always satisfied. That is, this transformation-based tactic can always guarantee the stability during online tuning. To carry out the coefficient transformations, a function meeting a special condition is required. As long as this condition is met, this tactic results in a definitely stable recursive-type variable digital filter, and no stability issue needs to be concerned. In this paper, a variety of such transformation functions are developed and detailed. As those transformation functions meet the special requirement, one can employ any one of them in filter designs and obtain a definitely stable recursive-type variable digital filter. |
