Electrophysiological Indices of the McGurk Effect in Audiovisual Noise

(in English) The McGurk effect is an illusory phenomenon in which a person perceives "Da" when presented with an image in which the sound of "Ba" is superimposed on the mouth movement of "Ga". This illusion is often used as an effective experimental method to study audiovisual integration. However, the McGurk effect in situations with insufficient audiovisual information is not well understood. Recently, it has been reported that the McGurk effect is reflected in the event-related potentials (mismatch negativity) of the electroencephalogram (EEG) in the oddball task. In this study, we investigated the effects of the intensity of audiovisual noise on the incidence of the McGurk effect using two types of oddball tasks, and examined the brain activity that reflects the McGurk effect using event-related potentials in the electroencephalogram. The results were consistent with the report by Stacey et al (2021). that auditory noise enhances the incidence of the McGurk effect and visual noise suppresses the incidence of the McGurk effect.
Furthermore, when a large auditory noise was applied, which induced a strong McGurk effect, a significant difference was observed in event-related potentials at around 350 ms between the target and standard stimuli.
