One of the effective experimental methods for studying multisensory integration information processing is to investigate how multistable visual perception is affected by auditory information.
Multistable perception is a phenomenon in which multiple perceptual states are spontaneously switched over time during sustained fixation on ambiguous visual information with two or more graphical meanings.
It has been reported that auditory information can bias the perception of ambiguous figures, which are often used in the study of multistable perception.
Although ambiguous figures have inherently several meanings, it is not very well understood yet whether using symbols as target stimuli, which require later learning of their meanings such as Chinese characters, will also result in a perceptual bias due to auditory information.
Here, we investigated the effects of sustained gazing on symbols by focusing on "Gestaltzerfall", a phenomenon in which the meaning of a Chinese character becomes imperceptible after sustained gazing.
We investigated the effect of adding information related to the target Kanji on the incidence of Gestaltzerfall, and examined brain activity correlated with the incidence of Gestaltzerfall.
The results showed that the addition of relevant information reduced the incidence of Gestaltzerfall compared to the addition of no information or irrelevant information.
In order to investigate brain regions related to Gestalt disintegration, we investigated brain regions that showed differences in event-related potentials during disintegration and non-collapses.
A negative correlation was observed in Fz and T4 at 250 ms after presentation of the target Kanji, a negative correlation in O1 at 320 ms, and a positive correlation in Cz, Pz, and T3 at 500 ms. |
