Observation of Tropospheric Propagation Delay using Distance Measuring Equipment

(in English) Vulnerability of GNSS has been mentioned as an important issue even though aircraft navigation relies on GNSS. So, performance improvements of existing Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) positioning are being focused as a backup in case that GNSS signal losses. Many researches are being conducted mainly at European organizations. Multipath and tropospheric delay are factors which degrade DME positioning related to electromagnetic propagation. So, the evaluation of these factors in detail are required for the utilization as a GNSS backup. This paper shows DME errors caused by tropospheric delay in the range of up to 300km observed using a flight of an experimental aircraft at a constant altitude.
