We compared the overfitting characteristics of artificial-neural-network- (ANN-) and Volterra-series-transfer-function- (VSTF-) based nonlinear equalizers for repeated random bit patterns. When the number of hidden-layer units of the 3-layer ANN was 10, which is usually enough to compensate for nonlinear waveform distortion, the overfitting was smaller than that of the VSTF. When we used an ANN with 1000 hidden-layer units, with which the computational complexity was comparable to that of the VSTF, the overfitting characteristics was also comparable to that of the VSTF. |
