A Possible Utilization of Skin Potential Activity for Measuring Autonomic Nervous System Activity

This study aims to investigate a possible utilization of bio-signal data in an experimental study. Skin potential activity (SPA) was compared to finger pulse wave during running reaction time tasks in nurses. Both data showed that participants’ sympathetic nervous system activity tended to decrease over the latter half (second block) of the experiment, there was a significant difference found in skin potential level particularly. On the other hand, some of the participants, 4 out of 18, showed different changes in pulse wave and SPA. This implies that there is a possibility of showing different characteristics between those indices of autonomic nervous system activity. Similar to the decrease of skin potential level, a significant difference between two blocks was also found for reaction time, which was faster in the second block compared to the first block. For the response accuracy in the second block, the high-accuracy group indicated lower skin potential level compared to the low-accuracy group. These results indicate that SPA is likely to relate to behavioral parameters. Additionally, SPA is easy to visualize its changes over time, we therefore propose here that SPA has a high value of utilization in an experimental study. |
