Time Correction Method at Room Temperature Based on the Temperature Characteristics of Clock Frequency

(in English) IoT devices require accurate time synchronization, but using NTP involves the risk due to communication with external devices. In addition, the GNSS or standard radio waves requires stable signal strength and additional devices for reception. We have the technology of adjusting the step frequency of the system time as a method without communication with external devices and additional devices. However, since the correction is generally adjusted by a constant value, it is vulnerable to environmental temperature changes, resulting in a significant loss of accuracy over a long time. In this paper, we propose a time correction method based on the temperature characteristics of clock frequency and evaluate whether the temperature characteristics measured in a thermostatic chamber could be available for time correction at room temperature. We also discuss the differences in temperature characteristics between the thermostatic chamber and room temperature environments. This system enables time correction without external communication and can be widely applied to existing CPUs because it uses a CPU temperature sensor.
