Initial Study on Decoding Methods of LDM Transmission for Satellite Broadcasting System
Yuki Koizumi, Masashi Kamei (NHK) SAT2022-53
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We are developing a satellite broadcasting system featuring layered division multiplexing (LDM) transmission that multiplexes multiple modulation signals with different power levels (injection levels (IL)) in the same channel with the aim of providing flexible services in accordance with the receiving environment. LDM consists of an upper layer (UL) with high power and a lower layer (LL) with low power, the combination of which enables the transmission of signals with different bit rates and levels of robustness in the same channel.
In this report, we present the decoding methods for UL and LL signals in LDM for a satellite broadcasting system. For the UL signal, two methods are described: one that assume the LL signal as a noise and the other that consider the constellation of the LDM signal combining UL and LL signals. For the LL signal, we propose a method that does not require the UL replica signal generation and subtraction process performed by successive interference cancellation (SIC), a general method to extract an LL signal from a received LDM signal. The proposed method as reference selection (RS) is expected to reduce the computational complexity of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR), a bit certainty used in LDPC decoding. We evaluate the transmission performance of each decoding method for the UL and LL signals by computer simulation and discuss the receiver complexity in these methods including the proposed method.
