Mid-infrared absorption spectroscopy using a hollow-optical-fiber gas cell was used to detect minute concentrations of ammonia gas which is known as a biomarker of liver and kidney function. Hollow-optical-fiber was used as as a gas cell with long optical path length and small volume, and is suitable for the detection of biomarker gases in exhaled breath. In this report, we investigated reduction of transmission loss of the fiber to increase the sensitivity by using a longer optical fiber. As a result, we succeeded in detecting sub-ppm ammonia gas at exhaled concentration by using a quantum cascade laser and a hollow optical fiber. |
