[Poster Presentation] Multi-Stage Tapers Improving F/S Ratios of Vivaldi Antennas in Wider Bands
Daisuke Homma, Mayumi Matsunaga (Shizuoka Univ.) AP2022-97
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Multi-stage tapers which suppress sidelobes of Vivaldi antennas in wider bands were proposed. Wideband antennas have huge demands by radio astronomy observation and imaging instruments. Vivaldi antennas are well known for their return loss characteristics are low in wideband. On the other hand, they also have the problem that sidelobe levels are getting higher as higher frequency ranges. This problem is thought to be caused by the delay of traveling waves in their radiation slots. In this study, that multi-stage tapers were able to suppress side lobes of Vivaldi antennas even in high frequency ranges by controlling guided wave velocity was verified. Numerical results obtained by an EM simulator showed that the presented multi-stage tapers improved the Vivaldi antenna’s bandwidth into the range between 600 MHz and 3 GHz, in which the F/S ratio was suppressed into 10 dB or more. For this reason, it was able to be said that multi-stage tapers succeeded suppressing sidelobes of Vivaldi antennas. Finally, the possibility that the presented multi-stage tapers could bring the performance of Vivaldi antennas to the satisfactory level for UHF band radio astronomy instruments was discussed.
