Design and Implementation of Payload Encryption and MAC for CAN Communication Using Lightweight Encryption SIMON

(in English) CAN, which is widely used for in-vehicle networks, is a low-cost and efficient connection between electronic control units (ECUs) and has an error detection function. However, CAN is not equipped with security functions and is known to be
vulnerable to data tampering and spoofing. In this study, we implemented a payload encryption, message authentication code(MAC), and key update function as security measures using CAN FD communication, which is an extension of CAN communication, and compared AES and SIMON, which are block ciphers, in terms of processing time and resource consumption. In terms of processing time, AES takes 0.88 ns, while SIMON takes 1.74 ns. In terms of resource consumption, AES takes 66% of the microcontroller, while SIMON takes 39%. From these results, it is concluded that both of them can be implemented
in time-constrained CAN FD communication. However, considering the implementation of embedded software, we conclude
that SIMON, which consumes less resources, is more useful.
