Spatial division multiplexing (SDM) technologies such as multicore fiber (MCF) are expected to be first deployed in submarine optical networks, where space and power supply constraints in the cables housing optical fibers are severe. This paper reports on the architecture and core resource assignment of a fishbone SDM submarine optical network, with submarine-branching of branch cables over trunk cables. The report will initially describe the architecture of a new submarine branching unit (BU) based on core-selective switches that directly support MCFs and can route optical signals on a core-by-core basis. Continuing, it will look at a core assignment method and its heuristic algorithms are proposed to solve the problem of increasing the number of cores required when adopting this BU configuration. |
