Subarray Optimization for Inter-HAPS Interference Mitigation in Massive MIMO Systems

(in English) High-altitude platform stations (HAPSs) have attracted much attention as a leading technology for coverage extension in the sixth generation (6G) mobile communications. When multiple neighboring HAPSs share a common frequency band, signals from one HAPS interfere with users in the other HAPSs or terrestrial base stations (BSs). This paper proposes a novel precoding scheme to mitigate inter-HAPS interference by optimizing subarray structure and null directions, targeting a cylindrical array antenna that realizes an ultra-wide coverage. First, the proposed scheme evaluates average received power of areas inside or outside the coverage, based on an envelope pattern of multiple user-specific beams obtained by applying nullforming to each subarray. Then, both the subarray structure and null directions are optimized by minimizing the average interference power or maximizing the desired signal-to-interference power ratio. Results show that the proposed scheme achieves 163–173% of total capacity of a conventional precoding scheme without nullforming by subarrays.
