Investigation of the range in application of a neural network with spike timing in quantitative analysis of two gas mixtures

(in English) Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are useful substances in industry, but the effects of exposure to VOCs through inhalation on the human body are problematic. Because the toxicity of VOCs varies from substance to substance, it is necessary to measure the concentration of each VOC on site in real time in order to determine the inhalation risk to workers. Nakamura and Tateno proposed a quantitative analysis of mixed VOCs using a three-layer feedforward spiking neural network with two semiconductor sensors with different characteristics as inputs. However, that sensor system only considered specific sensor responses. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effect of different response characteristics of semiconductor sensor arrays on the quantitative analysis of the proposed SNN. As a result, we revealed the effect of different sensitivity characteristics of the sensors in the proposed SNN on the quantitative analysis of VOC concentrations.
