Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) provides us with a full 3x3 coherency matrix that bears 9 real-valued and independent polarimetric parameters of the imaging window. We propose a new decomposition method of the coherency matrix in which 2 consecutive unitary transformations are carried out to null T13 element. The transformation reduces polarimetric parameters from 9 to 7, which is best-fit for 5-component scattering power decomposition. Five scattering powers corresponding to physical scattering models can be retrieved directly. An alternative nulling T23 scheme is also compared using ALOS2-PALSAR2 San Francisco quad pol data set. It is found that final decomposition result is dependent on the choice of nulling element and corresponding expansion matrices even in 100% utilization of polarimetric parameters (7/7). Intuitive color images are obtained from nulling T23 element. These scattering powers can be used to display superb polarimetric RBG images, and are further applicable for polarimetric calibration, classification, and validation, etc. |
