Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Currently, application of high intensity airborne ultrasound in high frequency band is expanding. For evaluating such intense sound filed, conventional 1/8-inch condenser microphone has some problems especially in measuring standing waves such as the finite size, toughness of the membrane, and necessity of regular calibration. Thus, fiber optic reflection ultrasonic probe has been used as an alternative method. However, its use is limited to very high intensity sound field due to the low sensitivity. In this report, we examine the selection of light sources and the effectiveness of amplification in the reflected light signal for improving SN ratio. Regarding the selection of the light sources, ASE, SLD, and LD were tested. Being based on the experimental comparison of the intrinsic noise of the light sources and the SN ratio in the sound pressure measurements, the ASE and SLD light sources were found to be suitable for the current measurement system. Then, the effectiveness of the amplification was verified for fiber amplifier inserted before the photo detector and electric amplifier connected to the photo detector. SN ratio with the fiber amplifier was improved up to 5.6 dB, while the SN ratio without the fiber amplifier was -2.0 dB. It was found that the optical amplification of the reflected light was more effective than the electrical amplification of the photo detector signal. Compared to an electric amplifier, optical fiber amplifier exhibited better SN ratio and enabled measurements at lower sound pressure.
