Double Differential OFDM Employing Decision-Feedback Multiple Deferential Detection for Time-varying Doppler Shift

(in English) This paper discusses doubly differential orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (D2OFDM) for underwater acoustic communications (UWAC) in the presence of severe doubly selective channel environments. Differential OFDM (DOFDM) is a good solution for severe doubly selective channel environment, because it does
not need pilot symbols for channel estimation. However, DOFDM suffers from tracking performance degradation and intercarrier interference (ICI) due to fast time-varying Doppler shift environments. In addition, transmission
frequency efficiency gets lower due to synchronization words (SW) inevitable in off-line software modems, because DOFDM cannot start up without known sequences, e.g., SW. This paper shows that doubly differential encoding
and double decision-feedback multiple differential detection (D2E/D2FMDD) and ICI self-canceller (ICISC) can improve performance in doubly selective channel environments. This paper also shows that subcarrier phase offset
(SPO) can mitigate degradation of transmission frequency efficiency. First, this paper discusses configuration of D2E/D2D and DFMDD. Next, this paper discusses configuration of ICISC and SPO. Finally, computer simulation
results confirm that D2E/D2FMDD has excellent performance in fast time-varying Doppler shift environments.
