Differential OFDM Software MODEMs for Underwater Acoustic Communications

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It is well-known that underwater acoustic communications (UWACs) play an important role in underwater mobile communications. However, UWACs suffer from time selectivity due to Doppler shifts and frequency selectivity due to delay spread, because the speed of sound is 1/200000th that of light. This channel environment is the doubly-selective channel. This paper evaluates the performance of differential orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) software modems employing multiple differential detection (MDD) with channel prediction for the doubly-selective channel environment of UWACs. The authors reported that differential OFDMs employing MDD with channel prediction using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and trellis-coded 8 PSK (TC8PSK) are suitable for double selectivity. This paper shows that differential OFDMs with parallel blind demodulation employing different re-samplers can compensate for mismatch due to the average frequency offset assuming UWACs channel environments.
