Development of a Lamp System Using a Pulse Wave Sensor to Promote Mindfulness

(in English) This technical report addresses a lamp system that supports mindfulness for palliative care patients and an experiment to evaluate its effectiveness. The system consists of a lampshade, a pedestal, an Arduino, and a pulse wave sensor. Breathing is inferred from the pulse wave obtained by the pulse wave sensor and is reflected in the flashing light of the lampshade. By visualizing the breathing of the lamp viewer, the system aims to support mindfulness by making the viewer more aware of his or her breathing. In the experiment, we evaluated the system by comparing the synchronous lamp with breath with asynchronous one with breath. The results of pulse rate variability showed no significant difference between two systems, but suggested that it may take some time for the lamp system to take effect.
