Nonlinear wave equation for wavelength/polarization multiplexed signals in fiber transmission

(in English) Nonlinear fiber transmission has been usually described by the nonlinear Schrödinger or the Manakov equation. However, these equations are originally for single-channel signal transmission, and not fit to wavelength/polarization multiplexed systems where the polarization states of each wavelength light randomly and differently vary during the propagation. This paper presents a nonlinear wave equation that describes the propagation of wavelength/polarization multiplexed signal lights through a transmission fiber whose birefringence axis continuously and randomly varies along the length. Employing the signal polarization state coordinate and averaging its angle with respect to the xy coordinate fixed to the fiber medium, a comprehensive equation is obtained.
