Distributed DDoS Protection Method in the Core Network with Reconfigurable Device Edge Coordination

(in English) Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks are a growing problem today, and it is difficult for individual users to mitigate DDoS attacks, so DDoS mitigation services are widely used to prevent DDoS attacks. However, this service provides a significant side effect impact, such as increasing transmission delay, on user communications. In this paper, we assume an environment where network slices are provided by reconfigurable communication processors (RPCs) at the edge of the core network and propose a DDoS mitigation method to protect the flows of normal users by restricting the bandwidth of attacking users by distributive RCPs coordinating on the slice. When congestion occurs due to DDoS, only the entire flow from the edge, where the attack flow contributing to the congestion is flowing, is transferred to the bandwidth-restricted sub-slice. In the sib-slice, attacking flows and normal flows are classified by a group of RCPs, and detected normal flows are migrated to the original slice, while attacking flows are migrated to the severe bandwidth restricted sub-slice. As an evaluation, the data capacity that could not be used by normal users during DDoS is calculated by simulation to show the superiority of the proposed method.
