Increasing the communication capacity and speed is required for recent wireless communication systems. Digital modulated signals with large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) are used to achieve these. For this, power amplifiers are required to operate high efficiency over wide dynamic range. Doherty amplifier (DA) is commonly used for the systems as an effective solution. We have proposed a design method for DA that integrates the output matching and the load modulation without a quarter-wave transformer. In this paper, we extended the previously proposed method to improve the back-off performance with a DA consisting of a carrier amplifier and two peaking amplifiers. The prototype DA achieved a drain efficiency of 56% and a power-added efficiency of 46% with a saturated output of 40.7 dBm at 3.7 GHz, and a drain efficiency of 54% and a power-added efficiency of 47% at 8.0-dB output back-off. In addition, a power-added efficiency of over 40% was obtained in the 9.8-dB output back-off region. |
