Images taken under low-light conditions such as at night or in a dark rooms are dark and their visibilities are very low. Recently, many low-light image enhancement algorithms (night vision algorithms) have been proposed. However, the conventional methods have some problems such as causing over enhancement in bright regions and/or noise amplification. In this report, we propose a new low-light image enhancement method without causing over enhancement and noise amplification. In the proposed method, the variable $varepsilon$-filter is applied to the input image. The dark and flat regions, where noise tends to be amplified, are smoothed. Then, the contrast of the image is enhanced by applying multiscale smoothing-based image enhancement. In the experiments, the proposed method is compared with the state-of-the-art methods through qualitative and quantitative evaluations. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method. |
