We are conducting experiments to acquire data from sensors mounted on high-altitude balloons using short burst communications from the Iridium satellite. Although the positioning error is larger than that of GPS, we are considering using the positioning information provided by Iridium satellites as a redundant system for safe operations. We estimate that the positioning error may be particularly large at high balloon altitudes, and that the error depends on the number and frequency of Iridium satellites that can communicate with the balloon. In this report, we present the results of a comparison of positioning errors based on Iridium data obtained during balloon flight experiments at altitudes of about 40 km over Australia and about 18
km over Antarctica. |
