Evaluation of the communication quality with Forward Error Correction and Delay Tolerant Networking

(in English) Non-terrestrial networks (NTN) using satellites and stratospheric platforms are required to expand Internet coverage and as a network in times of disaster. Free-space optical communication (FSO) is available to achieve high throughput communication with low power consumption, FSO is expected to support NTN, and demonstrations and standardization based on Ethernet communications technology are underway. On the other hand, FSO is susceptible to platform attitude fluctuations and atmospheric disturbances, making communication interruption tolerance an issue. This paper evaluates the communication throughput in low-quality communication environments using a signal processing technique that combines an Forward Error Correction (FEC) designed for free-space optical communications and Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN).
