The standard 5G Core Network (5GC) is designed as a distributed microservice architecture and consists of multiple Network Functions (NFs) with REST API services. Therefore, the context for communication of a single User Equipment (UE) is maintained in multiple NFs in a distributed manner. This design is prone to large-scale failures due to the large impact of an anomaly or update in an NF, and it also has a large overhead in terms of processing speed. In this paper, we propose the concept of Monolithic 5GC, which aggregates multiple NFs and reconstructs them as a single NF, based on the per-UE type design proposed by the authors, which provides 5GC functions for each UE. Furthermore, we design and implement Monolithic 5GC to operate on a cloud infrastructure, and compare it with free5GC, a distributed NF-type 5GC. |
