Running network functions as software on generic hardware is a promising technology called network functions virtualization (NFV). In NFV networks, a network service can be realized as a service chain, which is a sequence of VNFs. When a new service chain request arrives at the NFV network, an NFV orchestrator solves a service chaining problem by constructing a special path, called a service path, from the source to destination, which satisfies both the capacity constraints on nodes and links as well as executing the VNFs in order. In this paper, focusing on the situations with multiple service brokers, we propose competitive service chaining. In particular, we consider two kinds of service chaining: One is selfish service chaining where each service broker tries to select a service path to minimize its own service path delay and another is cooperative service chaining where each broker aims at optimizing the overall system performance. Through simulation experiments, we reveal that (1) both of them almost show the same performance under low network load and (2) the cooperative service chaining can achieve lower service path delay than the selfish one under high network load. |
