BBR Performance over Variable Delay Paths on Multipath TCP Video Streaming

(in English) The demand for video streaming on mobile networks has been steadily rising, with the majority of network traffic being devoted to video. The video quality heavily depends on the performance of TCP. Multiple Path TCP (MPTCP) has been proposed as an extension of TCP, transmitting data via multiple paths at once for improved redundancy and higher throughput. The video quality of MPTCP can vary based on the path scheduler selected and the congestion control applied to each path. Meanwhile, Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip Propagation Time (BBR), a delay-based congestion control algorithm developed by Google, is expected to enhance TCP performance significantly. However, MPTCP’s default scheduler selects the path with the shortest RTT, which can result in decreased video quality when used with the congestion-based BBR algorithm. In this paper, we study evaluates the performance of MPTCP when combining the standard scheduler, CUBIC, with BBR on paths with varying delays during video playback. We also investigate the most suitable MPTCP scheduling method for use with BBR.
