Importance of Inverters Placement in Ring-Oscilator for Laser Irradiation Detection

(in English) Laser fault injection is known as the most efficient fault injection technique due to its high spatial controllability and reproducibility. In response to this threats, Wei et al. have proposed a digital sensor capable of detecting laser irradiation composed of a ring oscillator. However, we showed that the ring oscillator not implemented adequately on the FPGA could not be protected the logic cell, and the suppression of frequency fluctuations due to the multi-spot laser irradation disabled the laser detector in SCIS2023. This report shows the importance of inverter placement for ring-oscillator laser detection sensors in FPGAs and proposes an appropriate implementation method for the sensors. Laser scanning experiments show that the proposed sensor can protect the entire circuit, including logic cells, from laser irradiation.Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed implementation is resistant to the laser detection nullification attack by frequency variation suppression using multi-spot lasers.
