Spatio-Temporal Load Balancing in Wireless Sensor Networks by Load Adaptive Method Switching

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is generally constructed in an autonomous and distributed manner by battery-driven sensor terminals, and preferential use of sensors with a good communication environment and simultaneous sensing data transmission cause load concentration in a specific area.
Dispersing such load concentrations is an important issue for WSNs since congestion owing to the load concentration reduces communication efficiency and rapid battery exhaustion reduces network lifetime.
For addressing the issue, spatial load balancing methods based on routing and temporal load balancing methods based on traffic control have been proposed to reduce the impact of these load concentrations on communication for wireless ad hoc networks including WSNs.
However, the spatial load balancing methods are difficult to control highly variable loads adaptively since it requires route re-establishment to accomplish the tasks.
Moreover, the temporal load balancing methods cannot solve spatial traffic concentration, which is the root cause of load concentration.
Thus, the single use of the method does not provide sufficient effectiveness against the load concentration.
In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal load balancing algorithm that switches load balancing algorithms according to the observed communication status.
The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by comparing it with the conventional method through simulations and the results show that the proposed method achieved more effective load balancing performance against congestion and network lifetime compared to the existing methods.
