Experimental Evaluation of Staircase Array Antenna employing Butler Matrix

(in English) The authors have proposed a staircase array antenna consisting of a one-dimensional butler matrix and patch array antenna substrates stacked in a staircase shape to simplify and reduce the thickness of Massive MIMO. In this report, a prototype staircase array antenna was fabricated in the 28 GHz band and measurement results evaluated the proposed antenna. The prototype antenna consists of a one-dimensional butler matrix and a patch array antenna mounted on a substrate of about 0.88 mm and stacked in a staircase shape with a thickness of less than 7 mm. The prototype antenna consists of 8 x 8 two-dimensional array antennas, and beam steering in the X-Z plane is performed according to the input port of the Butler matrix, and beam steering in the Y-Z plane is performed by the phase shifter. Beam steering in the X-Z plane using the Butler matrix was realized in the range of -55° to 55°, and beam steering in the Y-Z plane in the range of -29° to 25°.
