Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) There is still no effective treatment for Alzheimer's disease (AD), and symptomatic treatment with drugs has extremely low treatment satisfaction due to side effects and financial burdens.
To solve this problem, light stimulation therapy is attracting attention. This therapy aims to improve cognitive function by inducing the gamma frequency band of the brain waves through the presentation of light stimuli that flash at approximately 40 Hz. This therapy is characterized by fewer side effects and lower financial burden and is effective in improving satisfaction with AD treatment.
Continuity of light stimulation therapy is essential, and one hour of treatment daily is recommended. However, flashing light stimulation is very cumbersome, and the limitations of the device make it impossible to work while using the device, making treatment continuity problematic.
In this study, we propose a glass-type device that presents low-stress light stimuli called ISF (Invisible Spectral Flicker) stimulation in the peripheral visual field. In this study, we created a prototype capable of generating ISF stimuli and conducted the following two experiments. One is an optical characterization experiment to confirm that each LED light meets the requirements for flicker frequency, luminance, color, and spectrum. The second was a flicker intensity evaluation experiment to verify that the flickering intensity of the generated ISF stimulus was significantly lower than that of the flashing stimulus. The experimental results showed that the optical stimuli of the device met the requirements, and the flickering intensity of the ISF stimuli was significantly lower than that of the flashing stimuli. These results suggest that this device may be able to enhance the continuity of light stimulation therapy.
