Development of a speech-to-text translation system for the hearing impaired when participating in skiing lessons

(in English) When hearing-impaired persons participate in ski lessons with hearing persons, they need some kind of way to support audio information. The purpose of this study is to construct a system that converts the instructor's voice into text and presents it to hearing-impaired students using smart glasses and Web Speech Recognition API, and to demonstrate the system in the field. After constructing the system, we measured the delay time from speech input to text presentation and confirmed wireless microphone transmission distance as basic performance. Finally, we conducted a demonstration experiment with a professional ski instructor, a student with hearing impairment, and a student with normal hearing. The results were generally favorable, although there was a communication failure that may have been caused by the cellular service area. For the hearing-impaired student, the fact that he was able to communicate with the normal hearing ski instructor on the lift as well as improvement of his skiing skills, showed the effectiveness of the system more than anything else.
