Measurement of laryngeal movement during swallowing using a short-range RGB-D camera

(in English) Dysphagia is an issue of concern for the elderly because it can lead to aspiration pneumonia. Invasive tests such as endoscopy are used when symptoms worsen, However, it is important to routinely examine swallowing function using a simple method to prevent the occurrence of such problems.

In this study, we propose a method to measure laryngeal movement using a near-field RGB-D camera, which is a non-invasive sensor. We optimized the observation conditions so that the camera can measure small and fast movements of the larynx, and verified whether the camera can capture differences in laryngeal movements during swallowing. The results were compared with a 3D scanner using a head model including the larynx. The maximum difference was 1.9 mm and the minimum was 0.4 mm, suggesting the possibility of measuring laryngeal elevation. In an actual human experiment, laryngeal elevation was confirmed before and after swallowing in males. It was found that even in women, the larynx is not clear, but the overall shape change of the larynx can be captured.
