The illusory truth effect refers to the tendency to perceive something as truthful when it is encountered repeatedly or processed with ease. In this study, we investigated how individual differences in interest in health issues and health-related foods influence the illusory truth effect (i.e., the degree to which health-related foods advertisements are perceived as truthful). Our findings indicated that participants in middle adulthood or later were more interested in health issues than those in early adulthood. However, we observed no age differences in the truth effect for health-related foods. When we analyzed the effects of knowledge about health-related foods and interest in health-related foods on the truth effect, we identified an interaction between these factors. Specifically, we found that interest increased the truth effect only among those with limited knowledge about health-related foods. This suggests that people with less knowledge about health-related foods may rely more on their own feelings (interest) to assess the truth of health-related foods advertisements. |
