A study of wireless 2D beamforming by optical phase control

(in English) In the 6G wireless communication system, utilization of high-frequency bands, including the THz band, is being considered. Higher frequency band use such as THz-bands is a key to realize the various services in 6G. Using ultra-large-scale antenna arrays with thousands to tens of thousands of elements is one of the promising approaches by steering narrow beam to cope with large propagation loss and noise associated with broadband signals. In this paper, we propose a two-dimension-beamforming method using optical phase shift control to dramatically reduce the size of weighting circuit for ultra-large-scare antenna arrays. The proposed method performs one-dimensional phase shift processing for each of the optical carrier and signal sideband components. We develop a testbed using optical fibers and photo-mixiers and demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed two-dimensional beamforming in experiments.
