An identification of ambient electron density profile in the lower ionosphere by using a temporal variation of VLF earth-ionosphere waveguide propagation

(in English) The use of electromagnetic waves in the very low frequency (VLF; 3-30 kHz) band has been expected to serve as a possible method to continuously observe electron density in the lower ionosphere (60-100 km altitude, D layer). In this study, we develop a method to identify the electron density by using the time variation of the electric field intensity observed at multiple ground stations and verify the validity of the proposed method numerically. The electric field radiated at the JJI transmitter station (22.2 kHz) is calculated using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, and we define observation values numerically by postulating electron density profiles. An optimization problem using the FDTD method was solved to recover the time variation of the electron density from the electric field intensities at the ground. The results show that the electron density can be identified within 1 km of altitude for N_e=2.7×10^6-1.6×10^8 m^(-3), which is the range of electron density that influences the earth-ionosphere waveguide propagation at 22.2 kHz.
