(in English) The RAND Corporation is a non-profit research institution that helps improve policy and decisionmaking through study and analysis. The RAND Center for Asia Pacific Policy (CAPP) conducts Asia Pacific Fellows Program to improve the research competence for mid-tier to senior-tier career professionals. As an Asia Pacific fellow, the author conducted an independent research which aims to understand US-based stakeholders’ views on the desirable environment for defense technology innovation which is beneficial for both the U.S. and Japan. The author conducted in-depth interviews to over 25 experts from September 2021 to February 2023 to collect their views on key defense technologies in the highly-contested environments in the Asia-Pacific, the strength and weakness of each country’s defense industrial base in those technologies and the opportunities or barriers to U.S.-Japan defense industrial base cooperation in addressing those technologies. In this presentation, the research methodology and implications for future potential Japan-US technology cooperation will be explained.
