In this paper, we propose low earth orbit satellite (LEO) communications using Muti-input / Multi-output (MIMO), called LEO satellites MIMO (LEO-MIMO) systems. Various studies have been considered on the LEO system because of its low attenuation and low delay characteristics compared with geostationary satellites (GEO). We have investigated LEO-MIMO feeder link transmission between a satellite and gateway antennas to improve transmission capacity of LEO satellite systems. In this paper, we consider required conditions of a satellite- gateway antennas configuration to improve feeder link capacity. Our LEO-MIMO is performed with a single LEO satellite equipped with multiple antennas elements and a gateway with remotely-located multiple antennas. In particular, the conditions of the antenna configuration, such as distances of satellite/gateway antenna elements and the number of antennas elements in the satellite and the gateway, greatly affect the transmission capacity of LEO-MIMO. We evaluate antenna configurations using computer simulations to improve transmission capacity for LEO-MIMO systems compared to conventional SISO satellite transmission with single antenna for a satellite and a gateway. |
