A study on the rain attenuation duration characteristics using the different Ku-band satellite signals measured at multiple locations

(in English) The signal levels of Ku-band BS broadcast radio waves and JCSAT-5A beacon radio waves have been simultaneously measured at Osaka Electro-Communication University (OECU, Neyagawa City, Osaka Prefecture), NTT Yokosuka R&D Center (Yokosuka City), and satellite base station (Matsuyama City), respectively, from April 2022 to March 2023. The site diversity effects are examined among these three stations with relatively long distances of about 300 km to 700 km between eastern and western areas of Japan. Based on the rain attenuation obtained at 1 min interval, the duration time distributions of rain attenuation are compared among the three stations. The yearly cumulative distribution of rain attenuation at Yokosuka station shows the same increasing trend compared to the ITU-R recommendations, as at Neyagawa station, while the increasing trend is not clear at Matsuyama station. The site diversity effect among the three stations is almost consistent with the ITU-R recommendation. Also, the duration time distribution of rain attenuation is almost concentrated within 5 minutes for the threshold of 5 dB at each station.
