In this work, we provide a unified way to analyze the sample complexity of various quantum error mitigation methods using the quantum estimation theory. For layered quantum circuits where noiseless unitary of each layer is drawn from a set of unitaries that for unitary 2-design, we show that the lower bound of sample complexity to perform unbiased quantum error mitigation grows exponentially with both the qubit count and circuit depth. Our numerical simulation further support that, even if the circuit is not fully scrambling, such as the brick-wall structure, the noise channel converges to the global depolarizing channel, with its strength growing with the qubit count. We numerically confirm that the sample cost for the converged noise is well described with the derived bound, which implies that our bound is expected to hold for non-random circuits as well. Our work not only reinforces the fundamental limitation in quantum error mitigation, but also provides a novel path towards provably optimal mitigation methods. |
