A paradigm shift toward dis-aggregated computing, where computing resources such as CPU, memory, and storage are realized as independent resource blades, and high-speed networks interconnect these resource blades is being considered worldwide. The recent development of Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) to enjoy the high speed of Solid-State Drives (SSDs) has been remarkable, and NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) to connect storage nodes and computing nodes with high-speed networking has been attracting attention. It is important to discuss architecture from the perspective of both storage and network technologies. In this paper, we discuss the differences between storage and network technologies, and discuss points to keep in mind when evaluating the performance of dis-aggregated computing architecture, where storage nodes and computing nodes are interconnected through high-speed networks based on NVMe-oF. |
