Toward 5G Evolution & 6G, “New Radio Network Topology (NRNT)” which is distributed in the spatial domain is considered to improve performances of radio access. Recently, metasurface technology and reconfigurable intelligent surface, which are technical components of NRNT, have been attracting much attention from economic and other perspectives, and experimental trials have been conducted to verify their effectiveness. In consideration of legacy deployment, it is difficult to create a coverage area at the foot of a building, especially in high frequency bands. Therefore, to verify the effectiveness of a new solution exploiting the metasurface technology, authors conducted experimental trials using a 28 GHz-band 5G Non-Stand-Alone (NSA) base station (BS) and a user equipment (UE). Beamforming (BF) function in BS selectively aims the beam at five transmissive metasurfaces, and the radio wave through the transmissive metasurfaces is transmitted to the UE located at the foot of the building. In this trial, the BS was deployed inside the building of DOCOMO R&D center, and the transmissive metasurfaces were attached to a glass window in front of the BS. And then, we evaluated transmission performances using the UE mounted on a trolley. This report introduces an overview of the experimental trial and shows the transmission performances measured in the experimental trial. |
