The evaluation of bucked shin in young racehorse legs is very important, however, the initial diagnosis is still palpation. The next step is the X-ray diagnosis which has the risk of exposure to radiation. Therefore, the development of a portable, safe, and precise ultrasound method is expected. In this study, we investigated a very simple system for detecting bone surface irregularities associated with the bucked shins, mainly by simulation. First, a heterogeneous and anisotropic digital model of the leg bone was created based on CT data. Then, the elastic finite difference time domain (FDTD) method was used to simulate the ultrasonic propagation behavior in the bone model. Reflected waves from the bone surface were discussed with the experimental data. The reflection characteristics of ultrasound at the bone surface were discussed with the bone surface geometry. The, the possibility of the detection of the initial bucked shins was indicated. |
