Bats are animals that primarily use sound information, such as echolocation, and communicate through social calls. The distress call (DC), one of the social calls, is produced when they are caught by a predator. This vocalization might attract conspecifics to warn. Incidentally, the presentation of aggressive social calls, such as DCs, is known to increase the heart rate (HR). However, how the HR change is based on the bat’s sound perception, and leads to behavior (fear response) remains unknown. In this study, we conducted presentations of distress situation and oddball paradigms using the DC in Japanese house bats, and investigated behavioral responses and HR. We found that the distress context induced an increase in freezing behavior, and an increase in HR with parasympathetic dominance. This suggests that they detect the distress information from the vocalization context, and induce freezing as a fear response. |
