Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) typically causes airflow blockage and breathing difficulty, with the abnormal motion of the lung or diaphragm. Most of the conventional respiratory diaphragm motion evaluation methods only considered the uni-directional motion displacements, such as the forward-backward ones of the thorax and the upward-downward ones of the diaphragm. Using thoracic sagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) series, this study proposes a novel motion evaluation method by multi-directional displacement vectors, to investigate more actual diaphragm motion. First, the diaphragm is extracted by a deep learning-based field segmentation approach. Next, focusing on the region around the diaphragm, the KAZE algorithm is applied to detect the keypoints in the MR images between every two adjacent frames, and the matched keypoint pairs are further used to estimate the displacement vectors on the diaphragm by the moving least square (MLS) algorithm. Finally, the tracks of the two-dimensional motion corresponding to each position at the diaphragm are generated, whose similarities between each two motion tracks are calculated by spatial distance. The experimental results verified the differences in diaphragm motion between normal subjects and COPD patients by multi-directions, suggesting the motion asynchronization of COPD patients. |
